Many have been waiting for a higher water level at Bygdinvannet this year. M/B Bitihorn has been patient at the pier at Bygdin a little longer than usual, but today, exactly at 10PM, the Bygdin boat was launched, and is ready for the new summer season.

Captain Magnus Kvame is pleased to finally be able to sail mountain people inland to Jotunheimen.

M / B Bitihorn has sailed every summer since 1912, with only one stay during World War II. Since then, thousands of mountain-loving people have moved into Jotunheimen. The boat calls at Bygdin, Torfinnsbu and Eidsbugarden, all of which are great starting points for experiences in the mountains. M/B Bitihorn operates daily in the 2022 season until mid-September.

Captain at M/B Bitihorn

The JVB group consists of the parent company AS Jotunheimen and Valdresruten Bilselskap which operates the Nor-Way Bus Express routes Valdresekspressen and Øst-Vestekspressen, a boat route with MB Bitihorn at Bygdin and 12 tracked vehicles between Tyin and Eidsbugarden. The subsidiary JVB Tur operates tour buses and bus trips, JVB Travel operates as a tour operator with a focus on mountain holidays, among other things. under the brand name Jotunheimen Travel. Fagernes Verkstedsenter is a complete car and heavy vehicle workshop, JVB Eiendom rents out real estate and Valdres Transport runs freight transport, mainly distribution in Valdres.

About the Vacancy

JVB operates the passenger boat MB Bitihorn at Bygdin in Jotunheimen. The boat is 65 feet long, has a Scania DI9 engine of 350hp, takes 98 passengers and sails two trips daily Bygdin-Eidsbugarden-Bygdin via Torfinnsbu in the period 24 June to 28 August. Four weeks in July, we also sail an early departure from Bygdin to Torfinnsbu with return. From 28 August until 11 September, the boat runs charter traffic Monday-Thursday and regular route Friday-Sunday. The boat sails a crew of two, captain and light sailor.

We are looking for one or two captains who can work for a period or be part of a rotation system in the period from approx. July 1 to mid-August. Captains who have the opportunity and can imagine working for several seasons are desirable, but not a requirement.

As captain of MB Bitihorn, you must ensure the safety of passengers and crew, maintain the vessel’s seaworthiness, navigate and steer the boat in a safe and good way, have daily inspection of the machine and other critical components on board, hold safety drills, assist the light sailor with ticketing and loading / unloading of luggage and bicycles if necessary. The captain shall ensure that the vessel is operated in accordance with the company’s safety management system.

Our crew is characterized as service-oriented with a large degree of responsibility for both passengers and equipment. The crew is cheerful, happy to talk to the passengers and knowledgeable about the boat and the geography we sail in.

Qualifications

• At least recreational skipper certificate D5L, but deck officer class 5 or higher is desirable

• Basic safety course for seafarers 50t or safety training for seafarers on smaller ships.

• Courses in passenger and crisis management.

• Valid health certificate.

  Personal characteristics

• You are outgoing, nice, service-minded and love working with tourists.

• Speaks fluent Norwegian and at least masters English.

• Good collaboration skills.

• Feel free to take the microphone and guides along the way

• The ability and interest to learn both about the boat and its operation, but also about the area and tourism in Jotunheimen and Valdres.

Guide for Jotunheimen Travel

Jotunheimen Travel offers nature experiences in and around Jotunheimen. In the summer, for example, there are walks in Jotunheimen and bike rides along Mjølkevegen. In the winter, we will eventually offer e.g. cross-country skiing trips and other winter experiences that attract guests from Norway and around the world.

We work mostly with individual guests and small groups and strive to deliver experiences at the highest level.
Many of our tours are self-guided tours, where our guests book accommodation, transport and luggage transport with us, but are otherwise independent on the tour.

But we also offer guided tours, since some guests do not feel safe enough to go on a tour even in Jotunheimen and want a guide who has local knowledge of nature, culture and history from our region.
